Giro Atmos Road/Racing Bike Helmet (Small, White/Silver)

Product Description

The Giro Atmos Road and Racing helmet provides legendary performance, style and comfort - and features the new Roc Loc 5 fit system. After more than ten years of refinement, this ground-breaking fit system provides an entirely unique use experience with an unmatched level of comfort, stability, adjustability and weight savings. With Roc Loc 5, you can easily dial-in both fit tension and adjust vertical position with a single hand. Just twist the dial for a tighter feel on tough terrain, then back it off a notch and relax across the flats or a warm climb. Even with these remarkable features, Roc Loc 5 is still 40-percent lighter than its popular predecessor, Roc Loc 4. Roc Loc 5 systems is: 1) Micro Dial. The heart of the Roc Loc 5 is this ratcheting, micro-adjusting dial. A simple, two-finger twist of the Micro Dial opens or closes the retention system and each click is audible. 2) Three-Position Vertical Fit - It's never been easier to change vertical positions and fine-tune fit. We incorporated a three-position bracket that features 15-millimeters of precise up/down movement. Like the Micro Dial, this system can be adjusted without removing the helmet. 3) Carefully crafted ergonomic arms are shaped to be as comfortable as possible, yet work flawlessly with Giro eyewear (what we call Super Fit engineering). 4) Dual Pods - These two panels are designed to firmly grasp the back of your head while comfortably cradling the occipital lobe. Strap management - with Roc Loc 5, your helmet straps are woven through the fit system, so they are always in the perfect position. Complex Internal Design - Dozens of small parts work together seamlessly to provide exceptionally user-friendly adjustment. Minimal and Light, yet Strong - Although this fit system is 40% lighter than its predecessor, it's much stronger. In testing, Roc Loc 5 performs flawlessly, even after 6,600 cycles (equivalent to 3 years of riding with 3 round trips per day).

5I survived a 30 ft. fall with this
By B. Williams
I won't go into comfort- it's as comfortable as any helmet I had before. I won't go into aesthetics... those are self evident. What I will go into is what happened to me September 18, 2011.

I was riding my bicycle on Mount Evans, the highest paved road in North America. During my descent, the winds became unusual (and I'd ridden this mountain MANY times). Perhaps a thermal eddy, maybe something else. All I know is on a straight section I was fighting a headwind, and then I wasn't, with a curve coming up fast. the winds had reversed direction, causing my speed to go from 30 MPH to 50 MPH in seconds. I tried to slow, but began to skid, so reduced pressure to my brakes to maintain proper control. I couldn't slow enough. I left the road... and fell off the mountain, landing on granite boulders 30 feet below.

Ultimately, I sustained 9 spinal fractures, 3 in my neck and 6 in my upper back. My rib cage and right scapula were shattered. Both lungs were punctured and I came as close to losing my left kidney and my spleen as anyone can come w/o losing them. My head... even though I landed on my head & upper back... escaped with a concussion. My helmet was completely destroyed. My Atmos saved my life in an accident that by all reckoning ought to have killed me. Moreover, I'm walking, and even starting to get back on my repaired bicycle!

5Worth the price
By Efrain Garcia
Let me start by saying that once you get to the $100+ helmets, you really can't go wrong with any of your choices for helmets

Before choosing to buy this helmet I spent days researching all the helmet offerings by Giro, Bell, Specialized, etc. They all promise many vents, comfort, low weight and great designs -- it is difficult to truly say one helmet is better than another in terms of features.

My next step in ensuring I was going to pick the correct helmet was to visit all the bicycle shops in my city and personally try them on, even trying the same model in different sizes to make sure I would get the perfect fit. I found that out of all the helmets, the Giro Atmos was the most comfortable surpassing the Bell Volt and more expensive offerings like the Ionos. At the store, I even thought this helmet was so comfortable, I would probably forget I even had a helmet on after a while.

So I went ahead and purchased and put it to the test immediately. After 300 miles, I can confidently provide my review.

The helmet is light, well constructed and extremely comfortable (for my head). The airflow is excellent and keeps my head cool even in the hot summer (we get very hot summers). I found that I am sweating a lot less as I'm no longer having to wipe sweat off my face. The wind freely courses through my hair, so much so, that I was correct in thinking I would forget I have a helmet on.

Not entirely sure its a con, but I the padding seems to be on the light side. It is still comfortable, beyond the fully padded helmets like the Volt. I have not crashed so I cannot provide how it performs in such a scenario, but I'm certain the Atmos would not be as big a seller if it fared poorly in this category. Construction is solid and the new tightening system with the dial is a great improvement over the previous system. The design and color schemes are excellent as well.

4/5 stars. still an expensive helmet.

3Great Helmet but check the....
By W. Allen
Manufacture date. I just received one and see it is Sept 2010, about 2 years old. Unfortunately Giro states they have a shelf life of 3 years for optimal protection. So this means my helmet is 2/3 used up.

Some may say it's 3 years of riding but I have no clue as to how the helmets are stored. My Amazon purchases generally come from Phoenix so these helmets could have already been exposed to extreme conditions in storage, thus surely using up 2 years of life.

Not sure if was the luck of the draw or Amazon has a variety of helmets made at different times but a NEW helmet should be NEW. I know Giro made helmets yesterday so 2 year old helmets should naturally be avoided given the choice.

To Amazons credit they are sending me a NEW one to see if I just got the bottom of the barrel and we will figure it out later. Unfortunately they have no way to note the orders and have the stock person have a look-see before shipping.

The date is on the inside of the helmet behind the Roc-Loc so please look to make sure you have a fresh one.

I am picky about very few things but if I spend over $100 for a helmet that is supposed to save my life I want what I paid for.

I would give the helmet 5 stars but it's unsure if Amazon is getting deals or Giro is dumping old stock on Amazon, some one has to take a hit.

I will follow up when the NEW one arrives.
